Live Bait Theater's Fresh Bait Reading Series

Our Fresh Bait reading series brings together Chicago playwrights, directors, and actors for a reading series at Live Bait Theater where we produce readings of full-length, unproduced scripts under a limited rehearsal and redrafting period culminating in a public reading. The aim of Fresh Bait is not only to provide a forum for artistic collaboration by Chicago’s theatre artists, but also to seek out future productions for Live Bait Theater.

Live Bait Theater is one of the few Chicago theatres dedicated exclusively to world premiere plays. Through our 80 world premieres, we have learned the necessity of a workshop process in order to prepare the script for professional production. We have always conducted readings and workshops, both closed and open to the public.

Play Submissions

Playwrights must submit their work by first sending a query letter, brief synopsis and ten page dialogue sample. Live Bait accepts submissions for full-length plays, translations and adaptations by Chicago area playwrights only. Submitted plays are considered for possible inclusion in the Fresh Bait series, as well as for production by Live Bait Theater. Please submit your query letter, breif synopsis and dialogue sample to:

No Unsolicited Full Scripts Please!

Unsolicited scripts will not be reviewed. Allow at least six-months for us to follow up to your query. After reviewing your query, we will let you know whether or not we wish to read the entire script. Please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if materials are to be returned. Please note, we do not accept materials submitted electronically.

Should Your Play Be Selected for Fresh Bait

We will facilitate an introductory meeting between Live Bait, the playwright and the director where we will discuss casting and rehearsal procedures. The creative staff rehearses with the cast one weekend afternoon before the scheduled reading. Live Bait handles the cost of the rehearsal/performance space, script reproduction, promotion and pays a small stipend to the actors and director. No set or lights will be used during the reading. Readings are to involve minimal staging.
